COMPOSER & MUSICAL DIRECTORVENUE
ALMEIDA THEATRE & WEST ENDYEAR
2023ABOUT
Rebecca Frecknall’s revival of A Streetcar Named Desire premiered at the Almeida Theatre in January 2023 and later transferred to the West End for a sold out run.
Scored for a live onstage percussionist and singer hovering over the action, the score paired a traditional drum kit with a selection of unusually tuned cymbals, bells, and other found objects.
The score was crafted to tease tonality out of the kit, which was then amplified, enveloping the audience in the space as it weaved through the narrative, charting Blanche’s descent and revealing hidden insecurities.
Winner of the Olivier Award for Best Revival
Starring Patsy Ferran, Paul Mescal and Anjana Vasan.

PRESS
“Music and sound – from a band and singer above the action – are essential here: crooning, humming, whistling, the clash of cymbals, the thump of drums, an inchoate clamour; a mix of inner and outer chaos.”
- The Observer
“It is strongest in its use of sound and music…drums beat and thrum while cymbals crash, creating their own aural violence.”
- The Guardian
“The use of song and music add to the revival’s distinctive mood, which is alternately poignant and oppressive”
- The Hollywood Reporter
“Drums played daintily, broodingly, explosively. It's a conceit that raises the temperature a treat.”
- The Times
